Chain Waxing Services

A cleaner drivetrain. Less mess. Quieter running.

Hot wax lubrication replaces traditional oil-based chain lube with a clean, dry system designed to reduce contamination, lower wear and make ongoing maintenance simpler.

At Port Velo Cycle Works, we offer practical chain waxing services along with an introductory session for riders who want to understand the system properly.

New to Chain Waxing?

If you’re curious about switching to a waxed drivetrain, our introductory session is the best place to start.

We’ll explain the process, prepare and wax a chain, and show you how to maintain the system going forward.

Includes wax kit, drip wax and practical guidance in a relaxed small-group setting.

What Each Service Includes

Chain Waxing Service

Bring in your chain and we will inspect, prepare and hot wax it so it is ready to refit at home.

Bike Chain Wax Reset

Bring in the bike and we will remove the chain, inspect wear, prepare and hot wax it, then refit and carry out a basic gear check.

New Chain + Wax Setup

Supply your chosen chain or purchase one through us. We will size it, prepare it, wax it and fit it correctly.

Important Notes

Chain condition matters

Waxing works best when starting with a new chain or one with minimal wear.

Chains, cassettes and chainrings wear together over time. Installing a new chain on a worn cassette can sometimes cause skipping under load.

We will always check chain wear and advise honestly if replacement is the better route.

Maximum wear for starting a wax system

As a general guide, chains showing more than around 0.5% wear are not ideal candidates for starting fresh with wax.

Maintenance

A waxed chain typically needs attention every 300–500 km depending on conditions and riding style.

Why Riders Choose Waxing

  • Cleaner drivetrain with less residue
  • Quieter running
  • Reduced contamination in wet and dirty conditions
  • Less day-to-day mess than traditional oil lubes
  • More consistent maintenance routine
